A Day To Remember

I've been having this itch to post something.

So anyway, last Saturday, in the midst of design madness (we have a design assignment due on Wednesday), I learnt that sometimes, giving means receiving/giving is receiving. My grandpa has been talking about getting me a sewing machine recently. And last week, while he and my aunts were out, they saw a few on sale. So he was really bent on getting me one. I didn't understand why. I actually think this is the first time he's verbally said that he wanted to buy something for me.

So I was a little confused. It's not like I really wanted or needed a sewing machine. It's more of a 'if I don't have it, it's fine. But if I do, cool' kind of thing. So I didn't really want him to spend that kind of money on me. But after dinner, walking to the store, I asked my aunt why he wanted to get me a sewing machine so suddenly. And she said something like 'oh, because popo (my grandma) has always wanted to get you one'. Now, if you didn't already know (which I'm assuming you don't), my grandma passed away quite suddenly early this year. So she never got the chance to buy me the sewing machine that she wanted to. I guess this was my grandpa's way of paying tribute to his wife. And his way of saying he loves me.

Now I know I've always wanted to give my grandpa something. I just didn't know what he wanted or needed so I never got him anything (except for a mandarin book once). So on Saturday, I learnt that by letting him buy me a sewing machine and by accepting it willingly, I was giving by receiving.

On a side note, I really felt loved. He actually already had a sewing machine model in mind but we were looking around and we saw one that had a lot more functions but came a higher price (while still on promotion). He turned to me and said "如果你要这个, 我们就买这个" (meaning we'll buy the more expensive model if that was what I wanted). I was just like, wow.

So, thank you gong gong. (I'll try my best to learn all the tailoring you know and can teach! (My grandpa used to be a tailor last time))
